Project Brief
The client sought to remove an existing redundant conservatory and replace it with a contemporary rear kitchen and day room extension. A key requirement was to maintain practical side access for ongoing property maintenance while enhancing the overall functionality and flow of the ground floor layout.
PDK Design Solution
Our proposal introduced a striking single-storey rear extension featuring a vaulted ceiling with integrated Velux rooflights, maximising natural light and creating a heightened sense of openness and volume within the space.
The internal layout was carefully reconfigured to improve functionality throughout the ground floor. The former kitchen area, no longer fit for purpose, was transformed into a dual-use space incorporating a ground floor shower room/WC, a recessed zone for white goods was also introduced, improving circulation around the central island and main cooking area.
To achieve the desired open-plan aesthetic, a complex structural steel arrangement was designed and fully engineered with supporting calculations. This enabled the creation of a contemporary full-height glazed screen and bifold doors within the rear gable, seamlessly connecting the interior with the garden.
Particular attention was given to planning and material considerations, retaining the traditional facing brickwork visible from the front elevation while introducing a modern rendered finish to the rear façade, creating a balanced blend of contemporary design and contextual sensitivity.
